Trends Among Guys

Walking around campus there are many trendy guys to spot.  One look that has caught my eye is the “frat look”.  Greek is such a huge deal around campus and in the fraternity world it is important to look your best and dress to impress.  This look is I’ve seen on many pledges.  Zach is looking very put together in his khaki pants and collared shirt and tie.  Many pledges have to wear a button up shirt or polo with khaki pants.  Accessories such as nice dress shoes, belts and ties are a must.  Zach said the fraternities want their pledges to look nice and wear an outfit that makes them look professional.

Spirit wear is seen on almost every guy on campus whether it is a Kentucky shirt or some other team, a guy is seen showing their spirit somewhere.  Athletic gear is a good and comfortable look and the perfect outfit to wear.  In the picture, Ethan and Brooks are sporting a more causal and comfortable look seen on many guys around campus.  Ethan is wearing a Reds baseball hoodie and Brooks is sporting a UK hoodie.  Basketball shorts are also a comfortable look and a fast way to get dressed and go to class. Both guys say being comfortable is the main thing they think about when getting dressed in the morning.

You can see many trends as you walk to class; some casual, some dressy, and some in between.  No matter where you go you can find many styles because the University of Kentucky is very diverse and everyone has their own unique style.

The "frat look" is always a good look, but I like the more casual look on guys. That way when date night comes around they look extra sharp because you aren't use to seeing them dressed that way on a regular basis. One of my favorite guys clothing style is the metro look, they know their fashion and aren't afraid to show it! And I love that! (plus they know they look good)

I think fraternities asking their potential new members to dress up in shirt and tie attire prepare them to be future business leaders and helps ensure a clean cut/professional look for job interviews etc. 70% of the top executives in the Fortune 500 were Fraternity men in college. Nothing wrong with dressing the part a little early.

I think the frat look is definitely a popular one, but sometimes i would like to see guys switch it up a little bit. Everybody loves the casual look, because its easy when you have to run out of the dorm to make you class.I think it is very nice that the pledges have to dress up.

I have noticed so many guys complaining about the frat look that they have to wear. It's very clear that they would much rather opt for the comfortable look when walking around campus and going to class. Personally, I don't think they should be required to dress up for class, but maybe only for fraternity events.

I love the frat look! It's nice to see well-dressed men walking around campus. At the same time, I also like the casual look on guys. Another popular trend made by guys are the polo/button down and khaki shorts. It's a good mix between casual wear and something a little dressier, but not too business like.

Though I have seen many guys around campus in the "frat look", I have to admit that it looks awfully uncomfortable. I doubt that any of those guys would wear dress shirts and khaki pants to class willingly. The casual, comfortable hoodie and basketball shorts seem much more appropriate and relaxed for class.

I also love the Frat look! Its nice to see guys dressing up for a change instead of just looking like they just rolled out of bed. I think they should dress the part for a professional atmosphere at least once in a while to get used to it for after they graduate.

The "Frat Look" is a super popular look for guys around campus. You can never go wrong with button downs and khaki's. Sports wear is also another trend for guys. You can always see a guy around campus supporting his favorite teams with either a baseball cap or t-shirt. It is usually the non-frat guys wearing the more athletic looks.

I love the Frat look!! I think it is so refreshing to see guys dressed nicely and not looking like slobs all the time. Guys need to dress nicely more often in my opinion. The spirit look is definitely a big trend on campus with the guys. No matter what day it is, you'll always be able to find a boy with a sports team logo on him!

The frat look for guys is extremely popular on campus, you can walk around anywhere and see guys wearing khakis, a button up and tie. I think that look is nice however, I would think that the casual t shirt and shorts are the more comfortable choice to wear going to classes. All around campus you can see guys dressing either dressy or opting for the more casual UK spirit wear.

I too have seen the mentioned looks among men on campus but there are also many other looks that were not mentioned. The fraternity look is a nice way to look presentable and push young men into dressing professionally. Also I liked the section about spirit wear because it is so common on campus. I know I have my favorite game-day gear that I like to wear and it is a very comfortable choice for class.

The first time I saw a frat pledge dressed up walking to class, I almost laughed out loud, but I've come to appreciate the style of pledges. Some guys take their button ups and ties a step further with madras blazers and even bow ties. It's so nice to see a guy expressing personal style.

I believe that a professional look is a good look, but I feel bad for guys that are forced to dress that way when they go to class. I like to be comfortable when I go to class and agree that athletic clothing is nice to wear. I always felt that I had my whole life ahead of me to wear a tie to work and I'm glad I don't have to in college.

I also feel that with guys, comfort is the main thing that they look for. I do enjoy, however, seeing the guys dressed up and looking proffesional for their fraternities. There were a bunch of all guys high schools in Louisville and they all had to dress in ties and button downs with khakis, so I'm used to seeing it, and I think guys look better in that attire.

I Have to agree with Erin that I highly doubt any guy would walk around campus all day willingly in a suit and tie, even though it looks great. I think it just looks kind of out of place while you have some people walking around in sweats, etc. But at the same time it's great to see guys and girls all showing how diverse and unique UK is as a whole and that anything can go.

Nicole Bentley said...

The dress shirt and tie does look really nice but I do feel bad for the guys who have to walk around campus wearing it. You know they would much rather be wearing something there actives would be wearing. I think the casual look is very popular. Another popular look is khaki shorts/pants with a polo. I guess it could be another "frat look," but that's still always nice.

I think it is adorable to see guys all dressed up in there ties and collared shirts for the fraternities! That is my favorite look!

Cara Richardson said...

The "frat" dress is definitely a trend for guys around campus. All the guys pledging are seen dressing in business attire. My brother pledged to a frat last year, so he had the experience of dressing like this for a certain amount of weeks. He didn't mind it, but when the weather was hot he wasn't too happy wearing pants and a long-sleeve button up. However, many guys are still seen wearing comfortable clothing as are most students.

The "Frat" look is definitely popular around campus, it usually consists of khaki pants with a bright Polo shirt. Don't get me wrong I think this look is very attractive on guys, but I go for the more casual look. I like guys that can be laid back in their jeans and a hoodie. After all, you don't need to dress to impress everyday that's what the weekends are for!

I definitely go for the more casual look, unless the occasion calls for dressy of course. But none the less, these looks are prevalent anywhere you look on campus for guys.

I love this post. It really doesn't matter how you dress on UK campus. You can really do whatever you want with fashion, and this applies to both girls and guys. There is no specific guidelines that need to be followed. Some people roll out of bed and walk to class in the pajama pants while others get dressed up as if they were going to formal. No matter how you dress its all about expression of yourself!

Anonymous said...

I'm more of a casual laid back person when it comes to my style in clothes, especially going to class. Comfort is what I'm going for when the weathers' bad. I feel that the "frat look" is taking it too far because ties, dress shirts and khakis for guys can get very pricy and uncomfortable on hot days or walking just to and from classes.
-Kerri Prichard

Alyssa Allen said...

I agree with Drew when it comes to having the rest of your life to sport the business attire. I also understand why pledges are asked to do this. I think comfort is often key when it comes to what to wear to class but it will be interesting to see if guys resort to sweats once the colder weather starts.

I definitely agree that the "frat look" and sports wear is really common throughout campus- although a lot of the guys don't really like the frat look EVERYDAY on campus. I know i would hate if I had to wear a dress or skirt everyday to class! But this post is defintely true!

I think it's kinda funny seeing boys all dressed up because they have to for their frat when I'm sure that's they last thing they want to do when waking up for an 8am class! I also like the casual look with a sports t-shirt and Jordan shorts with some high top shoes because it shows their unique style and sportiness!

I think "the frat look" is definately very popular around campus since UK is very greek, but i like when guys wear the more casual look for everyday wear. I think i would like the "frat look" more to go out on a date or for a special occasion. But i definately like when guys show their own style!
-Aubrey Garrity

Yes, the most common look for guys is the casual wear! They like to slept in until the last minute, throw on a hoodie and shorts, and go! Every other guy you pass on campus is most likely sporting their favorite team, and if you aren't a big sports fan, like me, it's just another logo on a hoodie in your eyes.

I would totally agree about the casual wear for guys. It is very true! I feel bad for the pledges that have to dress up because sorority girls do not have to do that, but it definitely makes them look nice and professional. I love that this blog has the names of students they took pictures of as well.

I completely understand exactly where this blog comes from! You can always pick out a "frat boy" from the crowd because of how nice they are dressed and come on, who doesn't like a boy in khakis and a polo!? The casual look is very popular too and if I were a boy I would surely be sporting some UK shorts and a t everyday!

I agree that the fraternities around school promote a professional look, it clearly sets aside the fraternity candidates from the others. i think that alot of non greek people criticize them for looking preppy, but to each is own. It is a uniform for them just as a rotc student has to wear a uniform. For the most part i prefer wearing casual and spirit wear for class attire

Marissa Payne said...

I think the professional look is a must. No one should be representing an organization or fraternity in casual clothing. Because you never know who is watching you. A good first impression is everything to a new comer.

Anonymous said...

The "frat" look I always find very attractive and it's nice to see guys care about what they look like. Although the more sporty look is how guys usually dress. Sometimes it is also good that they don't really care what people think and show who they really are. I think that is unfair to make guys have to dress up to represent their frat, when everyone is different and has different taste in what they like to wear.

I really love this article. I have to agree with several comments before me; the "frat look" is always a good look!! Definitely a nice change from the sweats boys wore everyday to my high school! :)
Personally my own style ranges from the "spirit look" to the classic greek look depending on the day...and my mood :)

I think guys definitely have a more laid back style comparatively to girls around campus. Although a lot of girls were jeans and t-shirt, the guys get by with sweats, ball shorts, and more. I like that some guys are always dressed up, or looking nice. My favorite style is guys who are casually comfortable. Not trying too hard to get attention but still presentable to go anywhere.

Julie Wallingford said...

I stray away from guys who dress like this, it's just not my style or my personality. I love when guys are current with actual trends in the fashion world, instead of just followers of the crowd. That's probably sexier than anything.

I was witness to a guy dressed up on campus just the other day. He had a nice shirt, khaki's and a tie on. There are huge differences between what guys were on campus. Most of the guys in our class have a pretty laid back look. I feel that guys do have a more laid back style then girls do on campus.

Guys always look nice in the "frat look", but to me I like when guys go with the more casual and comfortable look. The two trends couldnt be any more different, but at some point I think that guys will more than likely sport both looks around campus!!

Though these are all true trends among guys on campus. i was really disappointed when i came to uk at the lack of individuality among the clothing choices of guys. I feel as if all i see is khakis and button ups and sperrys. I would much rather a guy have his own unique style that reflects his personality.

Anonymous said...

This is so true. I feel like everyone i turn there is a frat boy or someone wearing a tie, khakis, or button up. The guys that don't wear that stuff do either wear t-shirts, hoodies, sweats, or basketball shorts. Sometimes i wish there was more diversity within guys fashion here but these looks are both fine with me

I agree that there is not a whole lot of individality among guys on campus, especially those in fraternities. Not only is not my style, but I think guys should wear something because they want to, not because someone else tells them to.

Guys aren't very hard to please. I'm sure most of them wake up in the morning, roll out of bed, and grab the first thing they see. This article did a great job pulling out what they could of the individual taste among campus. As with most girls though, they share something in common, boys like to sport their greek letters.

I like the comfortable look on guys for class. I will admit that I like seeing the khaki pants and oxfords though. But I think they should be reserved for ball games or date nights! Another trend I have noticed around campus on the guys are the socks and sandals look.

I have seen many of the frat boys getting dressed up around campus; it does portray a professional look and shows that they are serious about their education. Although if a guy is not in a frat, guys tend to dress towards comfort. I totally agree with this blog, how most boys dress in UK sweats because its the most comfortable choice when they wake up in the morning.

I am really interested in the topic of this blog. The only thing I thought about when I saw the frat look is that the African American Frats Dress a little differently. Then on the Spirit Wear boys do always want to be comfortable and that is the easiest thing to throw on. Being a girl I know I take a long time trying to pick out an outfit each day. Boys have it so easy.

ashley.holley said...

both the "frat look" and the spirit wear for guys on campus is very popular. you can never go wrong with khakis and a button down shirt or a shirt and tie especially when representing an organization on campus it makes them look nice and clean cut. also the spririt wear for guys is one of the most popular looks because its easy and its comfortable.

Nicole Benz said...

I think this post only partially captures what men wear on campus. I suppose because this is a class mainly of freshman they have not paid attention to all classes of males. I think that younger guys tend to dress more casual if they are not in a fraternity but as you are on campus longer the guys tend to get their acts together and usually wear jeans or khakis with a solid shirt. Although I do agree that spirit wear is very prominent on campus as well.

Guys who are in fraternities all dress very similar from their polo hats down to their Sperry's. I like this look on guys because it is very formal and appropriate for class, and also it doesn't look like they just rolled out of bed. I know that most of the time guys just like to wear athletic wear because that is what they are most comfortable in.

Morgan Spencer said...

Its so surprising to me that the guys on campus all seem to have very similar style. This post is so true because it seems its either the "frat look" or the "casual look". I have to say that both looks are great! I like the frat look if its not the super preppy frat look. I am just not a fan of a guy in pink, yuck! But the picture of the "frat guy" dressed in a button down and khakis is very stylish and classic, an overall good look!

Unknown said...

These two looks that the blog talked about are so different, but they are also so prominent. Everywhere you look you can see a guy in a button up and a tie as well as many guys wearing athletic gear. The frats definitely have a huge part in the dress-up section of guys. Athletic gear is quick and comfortable which many guys look for when they get dressed for class.

The "frat look" is advantageous for various reasons; primarily because it presents a sophisticated and professional first impression. The casual look is never unacceptable for class, but compared to the "frat look", it seems much less studious to the observer! I think the frat look is a great way of showing self-pride, and the confident look is very appealing!

I think being comfortable when going to class is a big thing for guys so that's why we see so many guys walking around campus in a sports shirt and basketball shorts. But I also think seeing guys dressed up, even if it is for their fraternity, as a good change sometimes. It's nice to see them looking so professional.

I have seen many boys dressed up for fraternities in my classes. I like it best when they just have a button up with the sleeves rolled up and a tie with nice dress pants or khaki's. I also think that hats are a big trend although that's really nothing new in men's fashion.

As a guy who some may consider fashionable, I do not necessarily agree with the second look presented. Although I feel many guys on campus may wear this look, I do not feel it is necessarily fashionable. The first look, however, is much more fashionable, and is a look that I wear often. I also like that the posters made sure to mention that this is a business appropriate look. It seems that young professionals on campus are preparing for their careers by dressing the part.

I really like the frat look! I think it's a great idea for guys to dress up sometimes, it can give them confidence. I'm convinced if the frats didn't make them dress up they would be going super casual everyday. It's nice to see them out of their comfort zone sometimes. I agree that the casual sports look is very popular among guys. Personally, I like a casual, somewhat dressed up look for guys. For example, dark jeans and a sweater.

I believe that this is an accurate post. It is a regular occurrence for a male that is a member of a fraternity to sport the "frat look" by wearing a greek t-shirt with a pair of khaki shorts. Also, many men around campus wear spirit clothing or athletic attire on a regular bases whether they are an athlete at UK or not. The casual attire that includes UK hoodies, basketball shorts, and just regular t-shirts are very popular among male students. This is a good post!

For me, as I get dressed in the morning I look for clothes that will make me comfortable. I don't want to be in class too hot or too cold, so majority of the time I just put on basketball short or sweat pants. I don't think too much on what I want to wear, because at the end of the day I'm just going to class and there is no need to get all fresh.
