It’s Football Time in the BLUEGRASS! UK vs. Louisville Tailgating Trends

The first thing you might expect to see arriving at any football tailgate would be a combination of jeans, t-shirts, and tennis shoes... But this is the University of Kentucky! Here in Lexington, fans and students are likely to wear much more fashionable clothing to this type of event.  On Saturday, September 17th, 2011, UK hosted Louisville for the annual rivalry football game and it was clear that the outfit choices of the two teams’ fans were very different.  While Louisville fans were mostly in Louisville t-shirts and jeans, UK fans were often found in dressier outfits.  Most girls wore dresses and skirts, some even in heels.  Wearing boots, instead of sandals, during this fall weather was another big trend girls promoted.  Most guys wore casual team apparel, but there were also a few groups of guys from UK who wore dress pants and button up shirts or polo’s in UK colors.
Guys who were not seen in dressy clothing were often found wearing jerseys. This was one trend that was represented universally by both teams’ fans. While it is not surprising to see guys in jerseys, a more unusual trend that is emerging is girls wearing either jerseys or jersey styled t-shirts. To accommodate this trend, many sportswear retailers are selling more form-fitted jerseys for girls, as seen in the above picture. There were many different trends seen at this year’s UK vs. UofL tailgate, and we can expect to see many more new trends in the years to come.

Whenever I go to a UK football game, I rarely wear the same thing twice. Some games I like to wear jeans and a UK shirt, but other games I try to find a blue dress or skirt. I like how there is a mixture of both looks at the games. It makes shopping more fun too, especially when you can find a semi-dressy outfit that is UK blue! As of now, I'm on the prowl for a UK football jersey like the girls are wearing in the picture.

I am from Missouri, and when our football team has a home game, everyone wheres a MU t-shirt and jeans. Only a few people wear nice cloths. So when i came here, and my first football game i went to, I was in for a shock. i thought i look cute in my jean skirt and Uk shirt, but i was wrong. Now at tailgates, I wear nicer UK blue cloths. And i like looking nice to game much more :)

I love how UK students get so dressed up for the football games! I'm honestly not a huge football fan, but I love to go to the games to meet with friends and have a good time. With everyone getting dressed up it really makes the games even more fun. Last week I wore a cute blue dress with some black boots. I'm on the hunt for some more blue dresses though so if anyone knows where I can find some let me know!

When I attended my first football game at Kentucky I was in shock that girls wear dresses, skirts, and even sometimes heels. I'm from Chicago and I'm used to wearing a t-shirt and jeans to the game. However, dressing up for football games has become one of my favorite things to do. Whenever I see a blue dress I feel obligated to buy it because I know that I can wear it to one of our football games. I think this trend is more of a southern thing because whenever I go back home to Chicago and fill my friends in on the fact that we dress up for games they think its so weird and can't ever imagine wearing a dress to their midwest schools football games.

I have been a cheerleader for the past 3 years so this is my first year being able to actually go and watch a game. Walking into my first game I was in shock. I guess I never really paid attention to what everyone was wearing at the games while I was cheering because I showed up to the game completely underdressed. I am from northern Ohio and when we go to football games we deck out in our teams colors. Never would we wear a dress, heels, or skirts. In Ohio we wear jerseys, t-shirts, and jeans. The entire game I kept thinking about how some girls were more dressed up for the game then I would be at the bar on a Saturday night. I guess if I am going to fit in here in Kentucky I better reevaluate my outfits for game day.

I was very surprised when I attended my first football game at UK. I'm from the north and there we would never wear a dress let alone a skirt to a football game! But not only do I believe it's a southern thing but also because it seems like the girls are dressed to party, not watch football. It seems like the main event for many students are the tailgates before, many don't even get tickets for the game. But hey, I'm not complaining! I'm not a huge football fan anyways and I've been enjoying trying to find more dresses in our UK blue.

I have been to many UK football games since I have been here. I have noticed that many girls like to dress up for the games wearing dresses or skirts. I myself have always thrown on a UK t-shirt because it is usually warm weather and I do not want to get hot. I think the girls look great on game days and the new jersey style looks awesome. I may have to buy a jersey and rock it for the rest of the football season.

When I first came to UK this year, I heard many rumors that people got dressed up for football games and to be honest I didn't believe it until I saw it. At my high school people would wear sweatpants and sweatshirts to football games and that was about as fancy as it got. I myself love to dress up for any occasion so I was thrilled that outfits for UK games were taken so seriously. I think it is fun to dress up for football games because I think it makes the event seem more important. I like to wear a nice blue dress with cute flats, or a blue shirt and a white top. I think white or blue belts also add for a great game day accessory!

It was really surprising to me when I began tailgating to see how many people got dressed up. I always assumed going to a football game, I would see mostly jeans and UK shirts. However, I found myself getting into the attire too! I like getting dressed up and wearing my UK tie that plays the fight song. Most of my friends get dressed up too and it's often a competition who can look the most spirited. I'm sure this trend will continue to spread and I love it!

I've been at UK for four years now and since my freshman year I believe I have seen this trend evolve into what it is now. Four years ago, when I would go to football games my friends and I would wear jeans UK t-shirts, hoodies, pretty much any UK gear and this was the more popular trend. Since then UK students have definitely been influenced by game day style trends of other southern universities like South Carolina and Auburn.

I've been coming to UK football games for years now and I have always seen girls dress up for football games. However, until I became a student this year I did not realize how many girls actually do dress up. There are a lot of girls who really go all out! I agree with the article, I do think it is a southern trend. I have been to both of the football games so far. I have dressed up for one game and wore jeans and a tank for the other game. I do think that the jerseys are really cute and could even be dressed up with a skirt as well. This trend is not very practical, but I do like it in ways. It is not the most comfortable thing to wear to a football game, but I like to dress up any chance I get!

I am one that enjoys to be comfortable for a Football game. Usually I will wear a comfy dress, there are many cute UK blue comfy dresses. I especially love it when I walk around the tailgating areas and commonwealth stadium when everyone is all wearing blue. It seems like people are so friendly on game days, and as long as your wearing UK blue then people will naturally smile at you or say hey! I love the trend of the tight fitted jerseys. I'm definitely going to have to get one!!

This article is so true! Being from the north, I am not really accustomed to the football game styles down here. I love getting dressed up with my friends for tailgates. It is really fun to shop for UK blue dresses, too. It seems like any UK blue items I see I have to buy. Coincidentally, this blue is really big for fall this year. What luck! I don't know if I can see myself wearing jeans and a t-shirt to a football game, but I'm sure once late October comes around I'll be changing my mind!

Last weekend was my first UK football game and let me tell you, I was in for a shock. I've mostly lived on the west coast, up north, and overseas and never have I ever heard or seen people dress up for a football game. I came in a simple UK shirt and jeans, I sure felt under-dressed for the game. It seems more like a tailgating thing though, because once I went into the stadium I only really saw people dressed like me. So, now from my experience I'll dress a little nicer and depending on if I'm actually going into the game or not will determine that day's game outfit. Good job on both spectrums of the dressier and dressed down looks!

As a Freshman three years ago when I was preparing to go to my first UK football game I planned on wearing a t-shirt and jeans. I caught on very quickly that such casual attire was not what UK girls wore to football games. At first this seemed silly to me but now I can't imagine wearing anything else but a cute royal blue dress or sweater to a UK football game. It is not only a part of the style now at UK but a part of the tradition.

UK tailgating and football games have always been a blast. I love to go and people watch to see all the different trends for the new year. This article captures the tradition of how most fans dress. Depending on how I feel and the weather you could catch me dressed up or in my favorite jersey and jeans.

Since I have been at UK fashion football trends have changed dramatically. This is my forth year here and I clearly remember my freshman year wearing shorts and either a UK t-shirt or a jersey. Now after 3 years trends have definitely changed into a more dressy look. As the article said, girls are now wearing dresses, skirts, and some are wearing heels. Personlly, I love dressing up so it has been an exciting change for me! I am interested to see what the next trends are going to be for football games in the future!

I love dressing up for games. As a freshman I would always just wear t-shirts and jeans and didnt get why people dressed so nice for the games. I love it now though and love shopping and seeing blue dresses and automatically thinking about it being a tailgating dress. Ive also noticed more and more guys dressing up too which makes it even more necessary for girls to look good too.

Growing up, I was raised to watch Maryland and Penn State football. As I got older I started going to football games, wore jeans and whatever team game i was going to. When I first started looking at school I wanted a school that had good sports and high fan base. Which one of the reasons why I came to Kentucky. When I went to my first football game I was expecting what I used to see back home everyone in t-shirts and jeans. But now that I've been here for 3 years, I've changed my fashion to more dressy and I love it!

When I attended my first football game freshman year I was in my comfy UK tee, jeans and tennis shoes. I soon found out that I was way underdressed. When I looked around it seemed that everyone was in nice blue dresses, hair all dolled up and some even in heels. I was surprised to see this at a football game. Football games have now almost turned into a fashion show everyone is looking at what the others are wearing. I thought this article did a nice job in capturing how Kentucky fans dress on game day.

My first uk football game, I was a cheerleader and didnt really get to tailgate ever, my first tailgating experience was in 2008 and I thought everyone dressed the same way, jeans and tshirt. As I was going to the stadium I was looking around at all the sorority girls, and was very confused on why they had on such tiny dresses with heels for a football game, I never really understood why that was and told myself I would never be caught wearing that to a football game because of the comfort level. My junior year of college, I gave in. I wore a dress but with sandles, I felt like I fit in way better when I did this, but I was very uncomfortable and probably won't ever do it again. This article did a very good job talking about the latest trends at football tailgates and It was very interesting to read.

Going to a football game i wanna be comfortable so for me i like to wear jeans or shorts and a UK t-shirt or a blue or white top. I really like the cute jersey's. Now with major companies like victoria's secret coming out with a collegiate collection, and all the cute boutiques around town there are more options than just wearing a t-shirt and jeans. really it all comes down to your own personal
prefrence. GO CATS!!!

As a junior, I have been to plenty of UK football games. And every single one of those games, I have worn jeans, a t-shirt, and a hoodie. Honestly I don't understand dressing up. Its a football game. Also, it gets really cold at some of these games and I would rather be in a hoodie and jeans and be completely comfortable than be in a dress, freezing cold. However, I do love the Victoria's Secrete UK line. I guess I just don't understand dressing up for games, and I'm even a MAT major now. But I am also a huge sports fan, so I just want to pay attention to the game, and not what everyone is wearing. If this becomes a trend for basketball too, I will be really upset.

I believe a big part of games in the south is to dress up for the game!I have always lived in Lexington and gone to UK games so I have always known that people dress up. I think this is a great tradition to dress up for games, I love getting all dressed up and going. So I agree with what this article says and I love getting dressed up for games and will most likely always continue this tradition getting dressed up.

I learned shortly after I got here about the unspoken rule of dressing up to games so I knew I needed to invest in some "kentucky blue" clothes. I'm from Ohio and the college kids don't dress up for their games like they do here. They just wear an OSU shirt and jeans with a sweatshirt if it's cold. I like dressing up for the games because it makes it more like an outing instead of just a college football game. The further south you get the more they dress up. When you google game day dresses they mostly coming in florida colors along with other more southern schools. I really like this post and I think they did a great job with identifying the trends.

When my friends visited last week for the UK game one of the first things they noticed at tailgating was how dressed up people get. Its definetly a change from other schools. Ive been to a lot of OSU and Texas football games and the trend seems to be wearing mostly just jerseys and jeans (even the girls). Here at uk I feel like every girl wears the blue shirt and black skirt. I think the reason for how dressed up students get for the game has to do with how greek the University is. And thats why guys will wear the dress pants, shirt and tie even if its 90 degrees outside.

Im am from Maryland and when maryland has a home game everyone wears a Maryland T-shirt with jean shorts and knee socks! The first Kentucky home game i went to i was so surprised how many girls dressed up for the game! I have a bunch of friends that go to Auburn and South Carolina and dressing up for games seems to be a big trend there as well. This trend is definitely a Southern school trend!

This really sums up the scene at the games so well! You look around and really wonder if you are at a football game or on your way to a dance or formal because of the fancy outfits so many girls bring out! Anyone and everyone passing by will know we are the big blue nation, because the skirts and dresses display it all. I think the trend with the fitted jerseys is really cute as well, because it offers the girls not looking to get too dressy an alternative option. Overall, I think the dressing up at UK is a tradition that we will see for years to come.
