Who knew garbage could be so fashionable?: The Neighborhood Series

Life size scuba diver sculptures made of clear packaging tape, dozens of colorful bundled garments hanging from the ceiling, and a vintage flight attendant costume. What do these three things have in common? They’re all found in a neighborhood near you. That’s right, Lexington’s Tuska Gallery for contemporary art held The Neighborhood Series 2011 Art show and reception on September 25 from 6 to 9 pm. The show’s purpose was a community involvement that brought together Lexington Fashion Collaborative and local businesses. Instead of purchasing materials, all artists and designers used discarded materials from these local businesses. Their finished products reflected the store’s personality and merchandise. Models were sprinkled around the gallery as well wearing unique and recycled garments that represented a local store.

Each store had a completely different look that reflected the items they sold. A CD store had different prints covering one of the walls from various CD's that they had sold. The models also represented the feel of each store wearing creations made from garbage or previously used materials. Just walking around the room you could get a grasp of what items each store carries. The fashion show was a great idea to really showcase the art and products sold in each of the stores and to also give an idea of how much you could actually do with discarded materials. All in all, it was extremely interesting to see what the stores had come up with and the models were very eager to show off the unique designs!

This is a really great idea. Not only does it express art but also in a sence it recycles unwanted and unused items. This was probably great adversiments for stores because people got to see both the products the store carries but also a little bit of the stores creativity. I would have really liked to go to this event and wish it would have been better advertised. Also, as a retail worker, I wish my store could have participated!

I think this is a great idea, because it shows how creative the fashion industry can get. With a low economy many retailers are forced to get creative and cut back in as many ways as possible. Using recycled products is a great way to get people in because you are saving the planet as well as saving money. I think this is also a great way to get people in because it is something new and not all stores do this. Whenever stores have this going on I think they should advertise around campus because I feel like many students including myself, would have liked to go, and I didn't know about it.

WOW! I wish this event had been advertised more. I so would have gone if I had known about it. It looks like it was such a fun way for stores to debut their merchandise and show off their creativity. I also like how the clothes were all made out of recycled goods. I think the event was a very cool concept that helps promote stores and recycling. I will definitely try and go next year!

Events like this will always create positive "buzz" in the community. Creative ways to recycle products is becoming a very popular trend. Changing the normal perspective people have towards trash can go a long way to determine how they will treat their own trash in the future. Instead of just throwing items away you might stop and say, "Is there any other way I could use this product." After all, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

I wish I had seen advertisements for this because I totally would have gone! I think this is a great idea! It's a perfect way to get people's attention to the store by advertising in a new and interesting way. It will also capture the attention of those who try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, especially since they were using recycled goods in a new, creative way. I think more stores should follow this approach to get more attention to their stores, especially the lesser known local ones.

I think that this is a really great idea as well and I'm sad that I didn't know about it until now. I think I would have really enjoyed going to this! I love finding new and creative ways refurbish old unwanted items. I think it's great that these stores are collaborating with artists for a couple reasons. One, it gives artists an avenue of creativity and supplies them with unique and maybe challenging materials to use. While also allowing the stores to reuse and recycle some of their old products which helps get them out of landfills as well as getting to see them turned into something new!

I found this article to be very unique and interesting. Back home in Columbus i went to something that was very similar to this. Though this one was very neat because the items they used were recycled from stores, and i always wondered what they did with all their left over stuff like that. Also it shows the fashion industry is always thinking one step ahead of everyone. I wish i would have known about this event, because it would have been something i would loved to go to!

Like everyone else has said, I really wish this would have been advertised more! I think these kinds of things are so exciting and give us fun, innovative ideas. While the displays are over-the-top for everyday use, I think it still shows that not everything we throw out is really trash. I think it is a really awesome way to display the individuality of stores and make a bold statement for recycling! Hopefully next year we will see more advertising for it because I know it would have been a hit with lots of people.

This event sounds like it was a major success. By making stores use recycled materials, they not only have to think outside the box, but also put their unused materials to use. This is also a creative idea to show the type of merchandise a store may sell, without actually showcasing the merchandise for sale. If this show was advertised more around campus, I'm sure it would have even been a bigger success. Not only would merchandise students attend, but environmentally friendly students would be interested as well!

I think that this blog is really interesting! I love that it's something different then what we're used to seeing. This place looks really interesting and definitely unique. it's definitely something that I would never have known about without this blog. I think you guys did a great job of drawing attention to something that most of us wouldn't have noticed normally.

I find this very interesting because it is not just advertising the clothing stores but other retail stores like the CD shop. I this this is a very interesting, creative, and efficient way of creating clothing and art at the same time. With the recycled products from a specific store you could tell what types of things they sold with the "garbage" used by the artists. I would have liked to attend an event like this!

I think this is a really cool topic to blob about! I wish the event would have been advertised more on campus because it sounds really interesting. I like that whoever wrote this talked about stores other than clothing stores that participated. It helps show the range of people that participated and who would appreciate this kind of event. I like the creativity of using garbage in innovative ways. It fits along with the "going green" movement that seems to be the trend over the last few years. This is defiantly something I would like to attend next year!

I really liked this blog! If i would have seen the event advertised more around campus i probably would have went. It's really neat to see all the things you can make out of garbage. At my old school we had a fashion show that i had to make an article of clothing out of recycled materials and it turned out really neat. It's also great to see that they didnt focus only on clothing and included other things like the CD shop.

The Neighborhood Series seems like an awesome event in Lexington. Like other's have said I wish I had heard more about it and I would have definitely gone. I love when stores use a creative avenue for advertising their merchandise. Showing what merchandise the stores sell by showcasing their trash is a really interesting way of informing consumers about their store. The pictures in this post did a really good job of capturing the overall vibe of the event as well.

The Neighborhood Series event sounds very interesting. It seems like a good way for companies to show their creativity. Being creative is a very appealing trait for a company to have. An interest in being more eco-friendly is also very important, and the companies' participation in this even definitely shows that they care about recycling and reducing waste. Overall, good article - it really gave readers a good idea of what the event was all about.

I think this is a really cool idea. Now that everyone is trying to go green and trying to improve their community. Starting at simple places like small stores around the community. The fact that different stores were involved not just a clothing stores helps get the point across and helps everyone understand.

This sounds like it was a really cool event to attend. It also represents the old cliche that one man's junk is another man's treasure. I love the creativity of them using old recycled items to present a unique display. This is definately thinking outside the box and catches the eye of buyers.

This is just another wonderful way to bring different types of people together. You have the "green" people, artists, and fashionistas all coming to an envent that has their passions collaborated together. I personally would have loved to go, but had no idea that it was going on. I wish that it would have been more publicized. Hopefully though, next year they will have another similar showing and it will get more media exposure. This is such a great way to bring the community together for the environment, with a little twist of fun !

I thought this was very interesting. I actually use to work at the gallery freshman year and it was always neat to see all the different types of things that came through. I liked how in this fashion show it wasn’t just clothing stores that you expected to be in the show. Instead there were stores like the CD store that were showing off their products. I thought that was a really good way to try to get other types of customers in. Then at the same time recycling garbage that would have just been thrown away.

This art show demonstrative several great ideas. For one it was able to find a way to advertise for local stores around the area in order to help try and bring in business. Thus leading to helping out the economy. Also it was economically friendly by using discarded items from the business in order to make the products and designs in the art show. I wish I would have gotten the opportunity to go see this as it sounds and looks very interesting. I can tell a great deal of work went into planning and setting up for this show.
