Halloween on a Budget

Living on a college student budget, it is hard to find a fun and creative Halloween costume. The trend for Halloween this season; was to make homemade costume for you and your friends. A lot of people took their favorite Disney characters and made costumes based on what they wore. One person we saw had created her and her boyfriends costume based on the Disney movie Up. She painted her shirt to look like the house in the movie and tied balloons to her shirt, while her boyfriend was in a boy-scout costume that was his when he was younger. Everyone seemed to love this idea, because it was a very creative, and was something no one else was wearing.
The other costumes we saw were, people dressed up as their favorite board game characters, such as Candyland, tv characters like the Flintstones, and everyday objects we use, like the Starbucks cup. When asking how long it took to make their costumes, they said it did not take long and they were able to find these items around their apartment. We found this very creative and unique, because making your own costume really shows a person’s personality. This was by far one of the most creative Halloweens we have seen on campus, and we can only hope it’ll become more creative as the years come.

I think homemade costumes are the best costumes! They show creativity and uniqueness without having to spend a lot of money. Last year I me and my friends spent so much money on costumes that it made us not want to dress up this year or wear our costumes from last year again. I think a great way to get ideas on how to make your own homemade costume is on Pinterest. They have an amazing do it yourself section that has things like gifts, home decor, apparel, and costumes! I think the biggest issue people face with Halloween costumes is coming up with an idea that has never been done before. Once that is figured out, you can start making your costume with anything and everything you have already laying around your house.

Agreed! I like the creativity involved with Halloween costumes. While renting pricey elaborate costumes can be fun I look forward for the chance to be creative. This year I went as Mayhem, from the Allstate Insurance commercial. I think the only cost is going to be the dry cleaning. It is interesting to see more people going to affordable creative costumes.

I have always been someone to wear homemade costumes for Halloween. This year my roommate and I made ninja turtle costumes, not only was the end product better than anything we could have bought, it also was a lot of fun. Going to buy all of the fabric and spending the day sewing it together was a great time and everyone loved the fact that our costumes were home made and not just the typical store bought ones. We also saved a lot of money by doing this, we spent a grand total of $10 to make the whole thing. Compared to the $120 for the costume at Party Depot, it was defiantly worth the time.

I think this is a trend that is catching on among college campuses. Every college student needs to establish a budget and does not have money to just throw around on a costume that will be worn for one night. We all try to think of different costumes that are unique and fun but at the same time not cost too much. Me and a bunch of my friends made costumes from the show 'Hey Arnold' and everyone loved it. Making costumes not only saves money, but it is a fun activity to do with your friends too!!

This is a great post that showcases that a little creativity can go a long way! Buying a lot of costumes can get expensive and they are not really something you can reuse again. Homemade costumes are great for people of all ages- not just college students. If you are like me, you wait until the last minute to pick out a Halloween costume and everything is pretty much picked over. Homemade costumes ensure that you are the only one wearing your exact costume and you didn't spend a fortune. I love the Up idea! That is one of my favorite movies so I will have to remember that for next year!

This year was the first year I wasn't able to dress up for Halloween and I was really sad about it. I love coming up with creative original ideas and making my own costume. There's just something fun about coming up with a unique idea and keeping it a secret to only reveal your creation Halloween night/weekend. My roommates and I in the past have always dressed up as a theme, which I think makes it more fun.

I dressed up for Halloween this year and made my own costume out of things I already had. In previous years I have bought mine from Halloween Express and they are not worth it. This is because you may see someone with the exact same costume on, they are made of horrible quality, and you can not really reuse them all that much. I didn't have to spend any money on my costume this year, and for a college student I was very thankfully for that. Like the article says, this also provided people to be creative. I enjoy Halloween and seeing all of the cool ideas people to come up with!

Homemade costumes were definitely very popular this year with college students and adults alike. I personally made costumes for my boyfriend and I. We dressed up as Pebbles and Bam Bam from the flinstones. The cost was relatively low compared to the typical costume costs of about $50 or more. Some of my adult family members also made their own costumes by picking up a few items at goodwill and by using items they already had in their closets. Some people also borrowed costumes from friends. The low cost options of creating your own costumes or borrowing them have been very common since the beginning of the recession.

I love Halloween and making my costume. Its the best way to be original and you know even though someone may have the same idea as you you will look different. Plus costume prices are outrageous these days. The quality of them is horrible yet they want $40-$50 for them. Ridiculous! Plus its so much more fun getting together with the girls and making a fun costume!

The price of halloween costumes are becoming outrageous. My friends and I decided this year that instead of spending all that money for just one night of fun that we would go to Goodwill and find something. We decided to dress as a 90s mom and daughter. We went to several Goodwill around Lexington and found some hilarious/hideous 90s clothes. My friend wore a jean dress and I wore a little kids pink jumper. We both only spent about $5 and everyone got a kick out of our costumes. I personally will never buy an expensive Halloween costume again after the great response we got from our cheap Goodwill costume.

I truly appreciate this blog post, especially since this year I had a few homemade costumes for the holiday. I love how you can be creative with the costume but also with the idea behind it. This year a friend and I decided we wanted to do a Sesame Street cast costume. We were really excited to have a throw back to our childhood television days but also to figure out how to pull the idea off. We each picked a character I was Oscar the Grouch then set to work. I used only a large green t-shirt with some oscars eyes and mouth on it, a pie pan and some aluminum foil I became Oscar and recieved compliments the whole night about it. I feel like this blog really hit the idea home that the creativity is what people like about homemade costumes and its one of a kind feel.

The creativity of costumes this Halloween was unbelievable! We're all on a budget and I think that just makes people become even more creative since you have to find different ways to make "something" come alive. This year I was Rosie the Riveter and everyone couldn't stop saying how much they loved it. I spent maybe $15 the most and the costume looked better than any other similiar ones at the stores. I'm going to start sticking to homemade costumes from now on since it makes me use my creativity and is good for my wallet!

I love how creative people can get on Halloween. I think that doing costumes on a budget and working with items you already own tend to make some really great costumes. The examples of costumes in the pictures were so cute and creative! I really like when people involve recent things in pop culture like the pairing of the house with balloons and the boy scout from the movie "Up!" too.

Every year Halloween comes down to who can throw together the best costume. Most people go to their local consignment shops and goodwill stores to try to get together the cheapest costume they can find. People have many different influences for costumes and I think goodwill gives you a wide variety at a very cheap price. The last 3 years I've gone to goodwill and found costumes each year for under $30. There are many costumes at the Halloween stores that cost close to $100 that you can make one of your own for way less of a price. I think wasting money on a costume for Halloween is a bad decision because you only wear it once a year.

While I did go out and buy a costume this year many of my friend made their own. And they all were really cute ideas. A few of my friends did Disney characters like Minnie and Mickey and some other did outfits from the movie Flashdance. But I do have to say my favorite one of all year was my friend who dressed up as a taco bell fire sauce packet, complete with cute little saying and all. Only thing it took was two pieces of fabric and some paper and sharpies, but it was too cute!

I saw alot of creative costumes the year for halloween. I didnt dress up but i wish i would have. I would have never thought of dressing up as some of the thing some people did Like the starbucks cup. That was such a creative but cheap and easy costume. With the price of halloween costume being so expensive teh trend of making your costume is only going to become more and more popular. Expecially with do it your self books you should have no trouble making a costume the hardest part is deciding what your going to be.

The hardest part of a Halloween costume is standing out from the crowd. No one wants to go as something that someone else will be, you want to be different. This year, a common costume was the Sun Drop girl, while the idea is creative it was not unique and I began to be on the lookout for the best Sun Drop girl costume. I think a huge part of Halloween costumes in college is trying to look attractive and match the character you are trying to portray. This can add a lot of creative and choice to common costumes.

I think homemade costumes are really fun and creative! Homemade costumes turn out to be some of the best costumes! I know my costume this year was homemade, I did not want to spend the money on a costume this year so I just made one from things I already had! If you are not wanting to spend alot of money on costumes but still want to look cute I think homemade costumes are a great idea!

Halloween can be tons of fun if you have a creative idea. For college students on a budget like myself, it's much easier on your wallet to make your own costume. The "Up" couple took great advantage of making their own costumes. I absolutely loved their costume. It was cute and creative, and I'm sure it was a big hit at their Halloween party. A costume like that is very impressive, and shows great effort, all while staying within a college student's budget.
