Basketball in the Bluegrass

The attire worn to any UK sporting event is never questionable.  The famous blue is always seen.  So it is no surprise when it comes to Big Blue Madness that the clothing worn by most fans is a blue UK shirt.  Many students were representing the blue shirt that represented Big Blue Madness as seen in the picture above.  These shirts were given away for free around campus for the event and for the football game last Saturday against University of South Carolina.  The shirts were reversible and on the opposite side said “Go Cats” and on the back it had “Beat USC.”  Also these shirts were given to students who were in the eruption zone to wear.  Big Blue Madness is the one event that gets everyone pumped for the upcoming basketball season.  You don’t want to miss it next year!

Rupp Arena appeared to be a sea of blue this past Friday night when about 24,000 Kentucky Basketball fans joined to celebrate the quickly approaching 2010 basketball season.  The atmosphere inside the arena was an unforgettable experience, attributable to the fireworks, fog machines, vibrant lighting, and especially the die-hard UK fans. The giant projector screens presented motivational video clips that added to the ambiance in the stadium. The student section was filled with painted faces, blue Spider man costumes, crazy blue wigs and several other fanatical garments. This year’s Big Blue Madness event was especially entertaining and a spectacular way to introduce the new teams for this 2010 basketball season. Be sure to make it to the games this year to cheer on your wildcats!

I had no idea that these shirts were given for free. I love how it is reversible too! What a clever idea. It's so great seeing so many die-hard UK fans come out to support our basketball program. It such an excitement when we have not just our school. but out entire community come show their support.

UK fans definitely know how to support their team. I think the reversible t-shirts was an great and fashionable idea. Individuals painting up, and wearing blue overall was just a few of the many different trends. I saw before and after the game.

Big Blue Madness goes a long way with the UK fans here in Lexington. People really camp out just to watch the basketball team play themselves. The one thing I do like about UK sports is its atmosphere, the fans here are really passionate about their teams. It shows how much the athletics program here at UK mean to the fans and people of Lexington.

I went to Big Blue Madness this year for the first time in a really long time. I think everyone around me was wearing a blue t-shirt. Its always nice to see the alternative to the t-shirt though with scarves and dresses or tops. I think the best part of BBM was the women's basketball couch doing the teach me how to dougie dance!

Im sorry to say I missed Big Blue Madness this year, but Im intrigued to see the team really play and where our standings are. I hope we can still compete with the other teams out there. Basketball season is one of my favorites, because you dont have to dress as seasonal since its inside. The T shirt idea was really cute and allows students to be more patriotic of the blue and white colors. I know the basketball players love to see a whole gym filled with the blue especially at home games. Its my favourite to see the different silly costumes people wear in support of the team.

I attended Big Blue Madness and it difanitly pumped me up for the season ahead. I've only attended a few games at Rupp, but when I was in the EZ it was like nothing else I had ever experienced. Tickets are already going on sale, and I'm getting mine pretty soon! I'm going to miss seeing John Wall out on the court, but I know we'll still have a good season; we're The Wildcats! Haha.

I wish i couldve attended Big Blue Madness and gotten one of these cool free t-shirts. I heard it was spectacular and a great way to get you pumped up for the upcoming basketball season. This just goes to show you one of the cool perks to being a student and fan of the University of Kentucky.

I didn't get to go to Big Blue MAdness, however I did get the free t-shirt and sunglasses. I think it is an awesome idea that they gave these shirts away for bbm and the football game. Basketball is such a big part of the UK community so it's really great to see that they are giving out free gear so that we can support our wildcats!

Basketball players here are like celebrities, and everyone wants to get there filling of them. So I think it is great they give the people what they want to get things going and get everyone even more excited then they already are. And who doesn't love free t-shirts and stuff? This just gives us no excuse to not support our wildcats.

I wished I knew about the free t-shirts. I had no idea that they were given out. I think that is a great way to keep our school spirit up and to promote the team. Basketball is huge around here and I can't wait for the season to start!

The reversible t-shirts are such a great idea; they "kill two birds with one stone", and the fact that they were given out for free makes it even better. I was not able to attend Big Blue Madness, but I personally can't wait for basketball season to start! Go cats!

I am really excited to start the basketball season and see the big sea of blue color all over Rupp Arena. UK basketball is huge here, so it's no wander that Big Blue Madness is a big deal and everyone tries to get tickets for it. What I like about basketball attire is that it is very casual, and people just want to show there blue wildcat t-shirts, and just pair it with a pair of jeans. Others however, go all out and dress up like blue spiderman, or paint up!

I wish i could have gotten a shirt, they look really cool especially since they are reversible! I guess i need to attend more campus events to get a free t-shirt. It seems like a great idea to get everyone pumped and excited for the game and especially for big blue madness, as if there wasn't enough excitement already! The t-shirts, especially free t-shirts, are a great way to hype up student even more who want to show school spirit who don't necessarily want to wear a wig of paint their bodies. I guess we need to thank those who are in charge for advertising for UK basketball because they are doing a great job!

I have been to several different college athletic events at various colleges in the SEC and I have NEVER seen such die hard fans as those here at UK!! Go Big Blue :) I love how the University itself encourages and enables the fans support with free t-shirts; and them being reversible is a greaaaaat idea!

I had no idea that they were giving out free t-shirts! That is awesome! I like how UK is giving out free fan-ware to get everyone pumped for the upcoming season. I love football games and tailgating beforehand, but there is just something about being inside of Rupp Arena that is indescribable. It truly is an amazing atmosphere!

I saw people wearing those shirts and had no idea that they were reversible. What a great idea! Basketball season is my favorite time of year - it is a very exciting time for UK. I agree that being inside Rupp Arena for a game is a truly unique experience and I'm so glad I've got to experience that while here at UK.

FREE is always the way to go and get people hyped up about an event. Big Blue Madness really helps build the Basketball teams fan base up. This season will be well anticipated.

The reversible shirts were such a creative idea and a great way to promote spirit as well as awareness of Big Blue Madness. I can’t wait until basketball season starts up. Being At Big Blue Madness really got me excited to return to Rupp and watch the boys play and to watch the girls at Commonwealth!

With basketball just around the corner, there is no doubt that fans are ready. Basketball is like a religion on the UK campus and so is sporting blue and white. Big Blue Madness is another way to show support to our CATS!

I like this post covering BBM. It is such a great tradition on UK's campus and is an awesome way to get UK fans involved who maybe usually can't get a ticket to games. Although it is only a practice, I like how everyone gets hyped up for basketball season. The shirts were a great idea, being reversible.

I definitely want to attend a basketball game this year. I did not go to one last year and I really regret it. I heard they're so much fun and definitely worth one's time to wait in line at the lottery to get a ticket. After watching Big Blue Madness I have a feeling UK is about to have another awesome year of basketball!

Basketball is such a big deal at UK and what a better way to get people pumped up than giving away free spirit wear and starting off the season with Big Blue Madness. These are great ways to get everyone excited about the season and ready for the games. I will be trying to get in on the lottery and get some tickets!

There is no surprise that Big Blue Madness had a tremendous turn out. UK Basketball is one of the favored sports not only with the students but all of Kentucky. The free t-shirts were just a bonus to getting the fans excited for not only basketball, but also for football.

Big Blue Madness has really evolved into something huge over the past few years. I like the reversible shirts that were given out, fairly clever. However, the best attire than a true fan can sport is going shirtless and painting the entire upper torso blue!

Big Blue Madness is a crazy way to kick off the basketba season. I've never camped out for tickets but I've been before, it was more enjoyable at Memorial Coliseum I think. Free t-shirts are always great, especially when they're at a sporting event, Kentucky basketball in particular. I wish I'd have made it this year!

I feel that it is almost inevitable for almost everyone to wear a UK t-shirt to any sporting event here on campus; especially basketball. Big Blue Madness was an extremely successful way to kick off the much valued basketball season of the University of Kentucky. Nothing but a UK t-shirt is more appropriate for this type of event.

I am so mad I missed this. I'd loved to see all the new basketball players and get a t-shirt. They are a neat way for everyone to come together and show off their spirit. I can't wait for the season to start so I can go to Rupp and cheer for the Cats.

Getting free t-shirts is always a plus!! Big blue madness looked awesome this year and its crazy how many people attended. I couldn't attend but it sure did look like a lot of fun! I hope next year to be able to be part of one of the most exciting nights on campus! It was a great show even watching it from home on TV, although being there would have been better.

I am from here and I went to BIG BLUE MADNESS last year but being in the nose bleed section couldn't compare to the emotions I felt being on the court. The fans are so dedicated and into the sport that I couldn't keep the goose bumps off of my arms! This event was one of the coolest sporting activity i have ever attended and I look forward to this season's team!

Considering that members of the basketball team are A-List celebs around Lexington, an opening practice that felt more like a concert was very fitting. While many say, myself included, that this year wasn't nearly as flashy as last year's Madness, everyone still seemed to have a good time. From the cool UK reversible shirts to a fleece UK poncho (I'm not even kidding) there were many different fashion looks at Big Blue Madness.

I did not attend Big Blue Madness this year but from what i've heard it seemed pretty awesome. I wish i had known about the t-shirtss! They look really awesome and perfect for wearing to a game. I also think that any of the Victoria's Secret Pink Collegiate Wear is a great choice for game attire and I believe they just came out with new fall styles!

Wish I had attended Big Blue Madness this year. I attended the past 2 years and it was a great experience but the free t-shirts was a big plus and i guess it helped to motivate the football team for the win against South Carolina. Will be sure to attend some basketball games this year!

I love the reversable t-shirts!! Such a cool idea! Also, I had no idea they were giving away free t-shirts, that's so awesome! I wish I could've grabbed one.
