Student Living Trends in Lexington

Apartment style living for college students is a growing epidemic. It offers college students the opportunity for a bigger living space close to campus and providing a glimpse into the real aspect of moving away from home. 524 Angliana, and Newtown Crossing are two of the apartment complexes that are targeting ‘apartment style student living’.

Moving into an apartment not only gives a person more living space and the freedom to cook something other than microwave pizza and macaroni and cheese it provides ‘decorative freedom’. The pictures illustrate how someone could decorate their apartment. We feel that seeing these pictures; apartment style living can bring more of a feeling of home while being away for college. The dorms are a good adjuster phase but that small space can only be tolerated for so long. In an apartment you have your own space. The kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living space are all in different spaces - a college kids fantasy. These are all also affordable solutions. They offer layouts in 2, 3, and 4 bedroom options. Definitely recommended to all UK students.

There have been many nice apartment complexes being built around campus. These apartments have plenty of space and it does not make you feel like you are living in a cramped dorm room. The Lex is a really nice living complex that I've seen recently. In Newtown, I love how you have the option of decorating/painting your apartment in whatever style you like. It makes your living space seem more homely when you have the freedom to decorate it.

I moved into a house off campus this year for the first time since I've been in college. I lived in the dorms for a couple of months and then moved into the sorority house and lived in the sorority house again sophomore year. Decorating was definitely my favorite part of having my own house! The sorority house rooms and the dorm rooms are so small you can't put much on the walls. And you also can't nail things in... so this year I've literally gone nail crazy.

I am definitely planning of living in an apartment, most likely next year. I live in a dorm this year and it is just was too cramped. I am really excited to be able to actually decorate! I wish we could have maybe seen more decorating trends on this post .

With so many different apartment complexes around campus, apartments have become a very popular living trend. Other popular trends are students living in houses around campus and in the dorms, but I think that an apartment is the perfect midpoint for both of these options. Personally, I would really like to live in apartment sometime soon, possibly next year. Having more space, and the freedom to decorate are two things I'm really looking forward too.

Living in an apartment is a great transition out of the dorm. I lived in a dorm my freshman year then an apartment my sophomore year and now I live in a house. Apartments still give you the feeling of being in a college setting with other college students right next to you. It is also fun to decorate considering in the dorms you can't do much. An apartment gives you that feeling of finally being on your own and is your new home away from your parent’s house.

Living in an apartment, especially one that has a payment plan tailored to the needs of college students seems like it would be a great college experience. It does give you decorative and culinary freedom, while still being less expensive than a full sized house. I know that I am ecstatic to get out of the dorm life and am looking forward to living in an apartment because my roommates and I will have the freedom to decorate all the rooms as we desire. Being able to split the bills with my roommates will make things cheaper as well.

I love going to visit my friends who all live in a variety of apartments and houses off campus. There are so many places to live close to campus that still offers you a sense of freedom. While most of the guy's apartments I have seen are not veery decorated, the girls have really put their own spin on things. Decorating an apartment gives you so much more freedom that the dorms, and is your first chance to truly live on your own.

Ive noticed that most juniors and seniors chose to live in an apartment either on or close to campus. Living in an apartment gives someone the freedom of having pets, having their own schedule, but a bigger financial and academic responsibility. I think getting up in the mornings is hard especially for eight oclocks, i dont know if I would personally be able to get motivated enough to be at school. I definitely plan on living in an apartment or house my junior and senior year. I miss my dog and I think thats probably the best incentive to apartment living. 524 is pet friendly and fully furnished, so its towards the top of my list of apartments.

I live in a dorm this year as well. I figured as a freshman it would be smart to be on campus and to be near classes. The dorm life isn't too bad, but it really isn't that great either. Next year I am most definitely getting an apartment. Ironically, I really want to live in 524 Angliana. I think they have very nice apartments and reasonable prices for students. More and more students are living off campus, so living trends is a huge topic to be used in Lexington.

I lived in the dorm my frist year in school and it was definitly way to small! The amount of apartments UK has to offer to students is amazing. I can think of at least 5 or 6 different complexes all with in walking distant to campus. I will be living in an apartment next semester and cant wait!!!

As a freshman I am living in the dorms, and i don't mind them as bad. My roommate and i have decorated like crazy and we have command hooks everywhere. I feel like we made it our own but i am definatly lookinf foward to being able to move off campus where i can have more space and am able to decorate much more.

I liked the post overall except I wish you all had listed more types of student living besides apartments, such as off-campus houses and greek houses. These too supply housing to many upperclassmen students. My favorite part of the piece is when you all explained why apartment life is good and what it brings to the table that a dorm does not.

I have seen many new apartment complexes pop up here close to campus recently. Convenience, affordability, the ability to make it your own and freedom I think is what draws students to apartment living. With all of these factors, it makes me wonder what the impact will be in the future on dorm life?

I lived in a dorm my freshman year and it wasn't that bad, but since I live on my own now I think how did I ever live in such a small space all the time. I live off campus with three other roommates in a townhouse and I love it! It seems that off campus student living is becoming so much more popular and now I know why. Not only do you get so much more space but it's also very affordable too.

While living in an apartment is great and all I feel like the first year of college you should live in a dorm, its a great way to meet people who are freshman just like you and can relate with a lot that you are going though, with that said apartments are and excellent choice for the remaining years at school, I love that you get to make it your own and design your own space! while I am enjoying the dorm this year, I can' wait to move into an apartment with some buddies next year!

Since being at UK, I have seen many new and upcoming apartment complexes around and off campus. One of the nice ones that ive seen is The Lex, its extremely nice and the apartments are spacious. I cant wait until next year when im not being cramped into a small room, and when I can actually start really decorating!

I'm a freshman and have only had the pleasure of living in the horrible dorms so i cannot wait to have the freedom of my own apartment. Seeing how much nicer the apartments are gives me so much excitement for next year. It must be a blast to decorate and have a much larger living area. The only apartment I've actually visited would be the Newtown apartments and they are gorgeous!

I love the idea of apartment living! I already can't wait to move out of Blanding Tower. My brother lives at Newtown and he and his roommates have so much freedom to "decorate" to make their space feel like home to them. I love it!

Im so jealous! I lived in a dorm last year and it was a good experience but an apartment would definetly be more comfortable. But a bunch of my good friends live at newtown and they absolutely love it, its really nice inside and really spacious.

I lived in the dorms last year, and this year I live in my sorority house, so I haven't gotten the opprotuinity to live in an apartment and have my own room or bathroom, but I definitly agree this is a college kids fantasy to get a preview of what it's like to live on your own. I think it would also be fun to decorate your room according to your taste, as well as decorating your whole apartment with your roomates whether they be random or friends. I plan on living in either a house or apartment next year and I can't wait!

Emily Stemkowski said...

I think that moving from the dorms to an apartment is a great choice especially for college sophomores who are trying to transition from the dorms to more independent living. In the dorms, everything was done for you basically. Moving to an apartment allows to you have more decorative freedom as the article said as well as your own space. Thing that are different from the dorms though, include cleaning your own bathrooms, making your own food, and dealing with bills like electric and cable. But the amenities included in the apartment complexes make the transitions easier, such as paid water bills, a gym that is close, and mostly furnished!

I think that for the first year or two of college it would be best to live in a dorm to get the whole college experience. But i definitely think it's a good idea to move into an apartment or house. Get a couple girls together, everyone pitch in money and get an apartment. I think that is a great idea and hope to do it in the future myself.

Living in a dorm is a great way to meet new people, i think you should live in the dorms during your 1st year and sometime your 2nd year. I agree with the post, apartments are so much nicer and have alot more room then dorms do.

So many of my friends live in these apartments that youve named, and they are beautiful..and at the same time fairly expensive.

danielle.custer said...

I agree with Amanda, living in the towers your first year is the best way to get to know people around you in your class! I love to decorate but there is only so much you can do with a dorm and the space that your given. I cant wait until i can move into an apartment and have so much space and freedom to decorate! I love to see what girls have done to make their apartment cute!

I feel that living in houses, rather than apartments, is becoming a growing trend amongst UK students. It allows for more space, and often lower rent. Though apartments are a common choice, I feel that renting homes will eventually become the most desired choice.

I lived in the dorms my freshman year and I loved being right on campus and meeting new people. But by the end of the year I was so ready to get out of those tiny rooms and go house/apartment hunting. This year, as a sophomore, I'm living in a duplex right by the library so it's very convenient and I get the luxury of my own room and bathroom! It's a lot more homey and we can add our own unique style to our living space. I love it!

Being a freshman, I have to live in a dorm, but I feel like it would be a lot easier living in an apartment. It suits college lifestyle better than dorms because you are not forced to follow the RA and dorm rules such as check out times. Another trend among students is buying houses with a group of friends; although its nice to have your apartment already furnished.

Although I currently live in a house, I see the special features that attract many students to apartment residence: fitness clubs, swimming pools, and tanning salons. In addition, most apartments provide quality furniture prior to arrival, which relieves one of the major hassles of move-in day. Apartments also provide for an easy payment of utilities, enabling a student to ease into the drastic change of living on their own. I love living in my house, but apartment residency is something I would definitely consider!

I completely agree with this article. I am currently living on north campus at New North Hall. The rooms are pretty nice, but it is still a completely different feeling from apartments. Next year I hope to live in 524 with my teammates, just like this post suggested.

Living on campus is good, but living off campus is great. When living on campus it just seems that you are boxed in, and although you do have more freedom than you did in high school, it is still that factor that you have to look up to someone, like an RA. With an apartment you are your own person and are free to do many more things than in a dorm, which is why I think off campus living is better. Not to mind that it is also affordable to live off campus.

I think what is interesting about campus living trends is how retailers market a lot of their products specifically for students. They have decorations, furniture, and other products that are necessities for college life. Target has a lot of these products and I have seen them in many students' houses/apartments.

I live in an apartment now and never got the experience of "dorm living". I love the freedom and the option to decorate and cook whatever I want, but it is important to think about all the expenses that come along with living on your own! There can definitly be some unexpected costs that you may think the apartment complex is responsible for but they're actually not...its all on you!!

I unfortunately live in a dorm and I can't wait to have an apartment next year!! The dorms are alright but I feel like I'm living in a jail cell most the time. With cinder block walls and air that only works sometime, its not the best place to live, but i guess everyone should have the dorm room experience. Everyone talks about how nice 524 is, I would love to live there or Newtown!

After seeing this post, I want an apartment even more. I'm going stir crazy in the dorms. I transferred here this semester so I ended up in the dorms again because everyone already had their housing assignments for this year and single bedroom apartments tend to be very expensive. I can not wait to move into an apartment because, like you mentioned in the post, it has more of a home feel. The dorms were okay for a semester or two but I am beyond ready for my own space. I'm counting down the days until I can manage to get an apartment. I got stuck in Jewell Hall and starting out the semester in the late summer heat with no AC has made me very determined to figure out how to afford an apartment.

I like that apartments were featured in this post. I never lived in one, although I have had the opportunity to decorate since it is my second year living in a house on campus. I have seen most of the apartment complexes on campus and think they are all suitable for college students. It is nicer to have a house though when they are closer to campus with even more personal space.

I love the pictures! I think it was a great touch to take pictures of people's actual apartements/rooms, because the students that did this blog could have easily just taken a picture of an apartment complex. However, I do feel there should have been a little more text to the blog, since the other blogs have more writing.

I lived in the dorms for 2 years and it was just way too small of a space to live in. Finally this year i moved off campus and now currently living at Newtown Crossing. I'm now able to cook some of my own meals and personalize my own room.

I lived at Red Mile Village and I definitely loved being independent there. Unfortunately, that was only for the summer until I moved into the dorms. I can definitely say that it's more than a downgrade.

I loved that this entry was a diversion from the usual blogs about apparel. I would have loved, however to see a few more pictures of different decor in apartments!

I cant wait to move into an apartment! Although I am currently living at the SAE house it is nothing like having you own room. There are many perks to living in an apartment it is cheaper than residence halls, you can cook your own meals, own personal bathrooms, unlimited visitation and many more.

I love this blog! Personally the dorms have been a blast for me and I really enjoy living on campus! However I can't wait to move into my own apartment or house next year and decorate everything just the way I want it! Newtown and 524 are awesome!

Great blog!!! It's true that an apartment does offer you alot more space and privacy than a dorm and that's why so many students are choosing apartment living. I wish I had never even moved into the dorms when I was a freshmen. I much rather live on the second floor of a house than the 13th floor in one of the towers.

I completely agree. I could not wait to get out of the dorm my freshman year. I live in an apartment now and I absolutely love it. It is much more convenient to walk right out to your car to go run errands or go to work then to walk all the way to K lot.

I think it's a good idea to live on campus your fist year of college just to get that experience you don't want to miss out on. It's a good way to meet new people and actually experience hadns on with your college. However, living in my own place is way better than a dorm. I greatly enjoy the freedom and having something to call my own.

Personally, I have never lived in a dorm. I transfered to UK my sophomore year and lived in an apartment that year. I have nothing but great things to say about living in an apartment. The student living apartments are in great locations, and most of them are less than a mile away from campus. I very much enjoyed having my own bedroom and bathroom that I had the freedom to decorate however I wanted to. My roommates and I also enjoyed being able to come together to decorate our living room and kitchen.

Although living in the dorms my first year was a great experience, I have to say that having my own apartment is a thousand times better. The Lex is a great place to live and so is Newtown. This is a very nice blog. I have stayed in the dormitories for the past two years. I really like it but an apartment would give a person that home feeling. They are like that home away from home. I am currently living in a dorm room and can't stand it! I agree its a good starting point. I wanted to live there when i first moved here just to meet people; but its way too small. The showers are gross, the closet is TINY, (which is a big deal for a shopaholic!) and I don't like all the visitation rules! I would love to get an apartment for next year and have more space and freedom.
