UK Denim Drive

With the movement of more companies becoming “green”, the University of Kentucky has joined forces with Cotton Inc. to support this movement, as well as help out people in need. The Denim Drive began on September 15th and will last until October 31st. This program encourages students to give back to the community while cleaning out their closets. By donating their jeans and denim products, they are helping produce insulation for new homes.

The denim insulation is a more environmentally sound product than traditional fiberglass insulation. The Merchandising Apparel & Textiles (MAT) club informed its members that the denim insulation is rated least flammable and easier to work with because it is a safe product.  Meredith Gross, a member of the MAT club at UK, explained its benefits, “I really like the denim insulation product because it is safer for builders because they can touch the insulation without using gloves, wearing masks, and taking other safety precautions. This drive is more beneficial than students probably think.”

Checking out some of the bins where students have donated we found a variety of denim products from black jorts (jean shorts), out of style tapered pants, and bright purple colored jeans. This program is easy to be involved with because the Denim Drive accepts any type of scrap denim. The denim can be any color, embellished with rhinestones, embroidered, or a pair that someone would consider “completely ruined.” Looking through the bins, we also saw an assortment of articles of clothing. Students need to be aware that the program accepts more than just your typical pair of jeans. All denim is accepted, for example a jean skirt, a jean jacket, and jean shorts have been donated. So clean out your closet, and come donate those old jeans you haven’t worn for two years!

I think this denim donation is very considerate for the UK MAT Club to hold. Along with this charity UK is going green throughout every aspect of college by putting more handouts on blackboard. Although, this charity alone shows that many UK students are trying to help out with the amount of clothing they donate to the drive. It is a very unique way to help people out in the community.

I am so excited to participate in this program because it involves not only MAT Club, but all UK students and provides them with a simple way to give back to the community. Denim is something that everyone owns in some form, and since most of us (including myself) have more clothes than we need anyways, it gives everyone the ability and opportunity to donate. I also read that the insulation is used mainly for Habitat for Humanity houses, another wonderful charity organization. It was interesting to see how the two groups partnered in order to assist the homeless.

I think this is an awesome idea from the MAT Club. This is a great way to become environmental friendly and give back to help someone else. I know I still have too many jeans, especially ones that are old, worn out, or too small and I am sure many others can contest to the same thing. If UK students really got involved with this, it would be crazy the amount of jeans the MAT club could really collect. I also think its interesting that you can literally use any form of blue jean in different colors, which just widens your variety to pick from to donate. Overall, I thought the blog was very good!

I love the idea of the Denim Drive. A friend of mine had me donate some of my jeans last year, but I didn't really understand where it was going towards. I think this is a perfect way to recycle unworn clothes. I never knew that denim could be used for insulation. It's great seeing fashion and charity coming together for a cause.

I think this is a great idea! I know I have so many pairs of old blue jeans just sitting at home that could be used for such a better cause! I had no idea that this was even a possibility for blue jeans, and it's great that we are also being more economical.

I think the Denim Drive is an awesome concept! i am in the MAT club so i am trying to help with drive as much as possible. Me and one of my friends are taking a bin to our high school to hopefully get some denim out if them! This is a great way to recycle and be more eco friendly!

This is a great way to get rid of old jeans and also support a good cause. UK is always looking for new ways to go green, and I think that the MAT club is doing an excellent job in moving us toward being a greener campus. Everyone owns jeans and probably has more than they need, so this is a perfect way for everyone to get involved. This really makes me want to help out and donate jeans to this cause.

The Denim Drive is a wonderful idea. It is a good way to help people get involved and the environment. This is a good way for old clothes sitting around to be useful. I know I have a ton of old jeans that have sat in a closet and now I can donate them and help the environment out.

I think the denim drive is a great new idea and works wonderfully with the MAT club. Everyone has old jeans, and this is a new way to put your jeans to good use, other than donating them to a used clothing store. I have never heard of this idea before, but will be looking for something like this in my home town too!

I PAINTED THOSE JEANS!!! :) The denim drive that MAT club is hosting with Cotton, I believe is such a good cause. Not only is it informing more people of how they can go green for a good cause, but its something fun that everyone can see the effect of recycling. Sometimes it is hard to live green as a college student and this is the perfect small way that can impact a community in a big one.

This is my first year being a part of MAT club, and the denim drive is an excellent way to get involved and help our community. This blog did a really good job at describing what the drive is about and how it is going to help not only the MAT members get expierence but also help recognize UK for its effort in going green.

I really liked the blog post overall. My favorite parts were the interview from the girl in the MAT club and how you all explained what the purpose of the denim drive was and how we could go about donating. I also found it funny how you all looked through the bins and found out what type of items people were donating. I would have never thought to do that!

I really like the idea of the denim drive, hearing about it last year on my college visit really made me think about how many housed we could insulate if everyone donated just one pair. I have old jeans at home I plan on bringing back when I go home to donate. I love the idea of fashion and charity comimg together. I wish more places did things like this.

What a great program. The ability to make insulation that is both eco and worker friendly is such a great concept. This is a great way to be both resorceful and help out the community. This is a great way to get rid of those old or outgrown jeans we have laying around the house.

I think the Denim Drive is doing a great thing! who would have known that you can use jeans as insolation in houses! I sure didn't until I found out about the Denim Drive. I also feel honored to because to work with Cotton Inc. and making a difference for not only people who need homes, but in the environment! Keep on bringing in the jeans.

I think having this Denim Drive is such a good idea. I didn't even know denim could be turned into insulation until I saw the boxes set up in the HES building asking for students donations. I know I can't be the only one who has a pair of jeans hanging in my closet that I haven't wore in years and donating them to a good cause that helps others is a good way to get rid of them.

I have many old jeans at home that I plan on bringing back and donating for the drive. Its a great charity to get students on UK and around Lexington involved!

The denim drive is such a great idea! I've never heard of such a drive before, its seems like such a new and very creative idea. I've seen the denim drive all over campus weather it be a drop of box or a stand with helpful information, they are every where. I plan on donating a few denim pieces to help out!

The Denim Drive is such a great project! Using the denim for "green" insulation is an awesome idea, considering how popular the " going green" concept is. This is also such a good project for the MAT Club because not only does this huge project help others in need and the environment, it's an awesome way to promote the club.

I think this is an awesome and different way to go green on UK's campus than the usual ways people might think, like picking up trash or recycling. I'm also in the MAT club and I actually saw the finished product of the jeans made into insulation and there is no fiber glass and you can pick it up with your bare hands. I think it's awesome that jeans can benefit someone in others way than clothing. It can insulate a house!

Emily Stemkowski said...

The denim drive is not only important for the MAT club, but to everyone on campus. I think this article did a great job in capturing the importance of this project. Something that the MAT club is doing to collect denim is placing bins in sorority houses, local retail stores, and local high schools to collect jeans. I know they have already collects 4000 jeans and its only October 5th! The goal is to collect over 6000 items of denim, which was how many items were collected last year. SO everyone needs to donate for a great cause!

I think the denim drive is a great idea. So many people just trash their old jeans and throw them away or something. But now there is an organization that takes those worn down or out of style jeans and puts them towards something good that helps out the environment for going green and helps out our very own MAT club.

I think the denim drive is such a good thing! We all have old jeans that either gets thrown away or given to the good will. But giving them to the MAT club denim drive is better for the environment and is a great helps people in need.

This project has much more potential than what I predict will be reached. I think more advertising would be very adventageous towards obtaining greater contributions; especially if more bins were placed at convenient, landmark locations around campus. This would hopefully encourage students to drop a pair off on the way to class, instead of not participating because it is inconvenient, or out of their way. The project has such great intentions and will help so many people in need, but has the potential to help countless more if these methods were to be used!

What a great idea the denim drive is! It gives everyone a chance to get rid of their old jeans while supporting a good cause in producing eco-friendly insulation for homes at the same time.

This post was very informative as well.

I think that this is a really cool idea, and i'd much rather have my used jeans go to a good cause, than resell them and only get like $2 for them somewhere. I think its awesome that UK has become so environmentaly friendly in so many ways.

This Denim Drive is such a good idea! I am a member of MAT club and i learned so much more about the drive through this post. It is such a good idea to donate this denim instead of throwing it away because people think it's useless. I liked hearing about the different colors of denim you can even donate to the cause!

I have so many old pairs of jeans, jean shorts, and jean skirts that are stored somewhere in my parent's house that are just collecting dust. I mine as well donate them for this great cause.

This drive really goes a long way to help the unfortunate, which is something that everyone in the class can help with by donating a few denims here and there.

I think this is a really good idea. I was unaware of what the denim was used for so thank you for informing me. I like to donate clothes to goodwill, but I always wondered what to do with clothes that were so beaten up I couldn't donate them. This is the perfect solution and a great idea by the MAT club.

What a great and easy way to help out those in need! This is such a great way for students to get involved with helping UK Go Green! I worked the MAT club booth at the BIg Blue Goes Green event and everyone that stopped by was really interested in the jean insulation. Everyone should give away a pair of their jeans to help the MAT club reach their goal!!

This fundraiser is a great way to bring philanthropy that seems rather selfish. The MAT Club has been very successful at the past denim drives and I assure that this one was just as successful.

I dropped off a few pairs of jeans and am very proud of giving them up for this instead of selling them to Plato's Closet like I usually do.

UK Denim Drive is an great example of Big Blue Goes Green. Not only does donating jeans help the environment, it always helps clean out your closet. I had given many of my jeans away before I came to school. And I wish I would have kept them so I could participate in movement.

Having these denim drop off boxes makes it easy for students to donate jeans in between classes. And who doesnt wear jeans?...Donating jeans is very accesible for alot of people.

This project honestly blows my mind. Its incredible that something as simple as blue jeans can be put to such a great use because we all have that old pair of jeans thats too worn to wear or that has a stain that won't come out. This is definitely a great place to drop those off instead of the trash! Great philanthropy :)
